AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)
Valor Middle School is an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) school. We believe that all our students will be college- and career-ready by the time they graduate high school. AVID targets students in the academic middle who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard to get there. The AVID curriculum teaches students to master organization and study skills, think critically, question, improve reading and writing skills, and collaborate with other students to solve problems.
AVID’s Mission: Close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
AVID Class Offerings
In the 6th grade, students may participate in a quarter-long introduction to AVID. This allows students to be exposed to the AVID Elective class. At the end of 6th grade, all students are invited to apply to this class. Once accepted students will be enrolled in AVID Elective for both 7th and 8th grade. AVID Elective students receive academic instruction and tutorial support, strengthen their writing skills, improve study and organization skills, gain “college knowledge,” visit colleges, and explore careers.
This year, we are offering AVID Excel in the 7th grade. This class is specifically for recently exited ELLs to accelerate English language acquisition, develop academic literacy, and place students on a path to high school AVID and college prep coursework.
